Botox® vs. Dermal Fillers: Which is the Right Choice for Your Skin Goals?

Having options is a wonderful thing, but when it comes to medical aesthetics treatments, there are so many choices available that it can be overwhelming. Here’s what you need to know about the differences between Botox® and dermal fillers.

At D’Allure Medspa in Dallas, Texas, we offer the very latest medical aesthetics treatment options, all performed by highly skilled practitioners. For many of our clients, the sheer volume of available options makes it difficult to know where to start or which treatment to try next.

Botox® and dermal fillers are some of the most sought-after treatments available today, prompting many questions from those interested. So we’re here today to give an overview of these treatment options in the hopes of helping you find the right treatment path for your goals.

Here’s what you need to know about Botox and dermal fillers, and how they can enhance your appearance.

Botox relaxes the facial muscles that create signs of aging

Botox and other neuromodulator treatments work by changing the way your facial muscles move. Crow’s feet, frown lines (the small vertical lines between your eyebrows), and horizontal forehead lines develop when the muscles in your face pull your skin in certain directions. Over time, those lines can become more prominent.

Botox is made from a purified form of botulinum toxin type A. In carefully controlled medical doses, it temporarily blocks nerve signals that tell targeted muscles to contract. In certain concentrations, this substance is toxic, but the volume used in manufacturing Botox is carefully controlled and safe.

When we inject Botox into your facial muscles, it temporarily prevents them from going through their full range of motion. This can soften the look of frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet.

Results often begin within a few days, with full results taking a week or more. For many people, the effect lasts about 3-4 months. At that point, you can decide if you’d like to move forward with another round of injections.

Dermal fillers plump the skin from within

Dermal fillers are a class of injectable treatments that work by placing a gel-like substance into the deeper layers of your skin. Fillers work to create additional volume in the treatment area, plumping your skin from within.

There are many different fillers to choose from, each formulated to create effects in specific areas. Thicker fillers are a great option for adding volume in the cheeks or other large areas, while thinner fillers address delicate areas such as the lips or fine lines around the mouth, and firmer fillers are for cheeks, chin, or jawline definition.

There are even fillers that can plump the backs of the hands or add volume to the lips. Many people choose a combination of different filler types to address more than one area in the same visit.

Fillers can last anywhere from a few months to more than a year, depending on the product chosen. Some injectable treatments stimulate collagen production over time, which can extend the effects. Traditional hyaluronic acid fillers primarily add volume or smooth lines while the product remains in the treated area.

It’s possible to combine Botox and dermal fillers

When it comes to choosing the right treatment for your needs, keep in mind that Botox and dermal fillers aren’t an “either/or” consideration.

Some clients choose Botox and fillers together as part of a nonsurgical facial balancing plan, sometimes called a “liquid facelift.” This approach can soften expression lines and restore volume, but it does not create the same lifting effect as surgery.

During your consultation, we evaluate your skin and discuss what you’d like to achieve from your treatment. We’re happy to answer any questions you have and create a customized treatment plan that aligns with your needs and goals.
