Multiple companies have developed treatment platforms that harness the power of light to transform the skin. Cynosure® Lutronic®, a leader in the medical aesthetics industry, offers the ICON® system, an outstanding option and one of our favorites here at D’Allure Medspa in Dallas, Texas. If you’re thinking of giving intense-pulsed light (IPL) treatments a try, learning more about the ICON system is a great idea.
Today, let’s look at how IPL works and five reasons why you might want to consider ICON IPL treatments.
Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, also commonly called a photofacial, works by creating pulsed light of different wavelengths and durations. This approach differs from laser treatment, which uses a controlled beam of one wavelength of light. IPL systems can also use filters to prevent shorter wavelengths of light (like ultraviolet light) from reaching the skin.
This light energy is drawn to the pigment in your skin, especially areas of concentrated pigment that are darker than the surrounding skin. Once absorbed into these darker areas, light energy is converted into heat, which triggers changes in your skin.
Your body responds to that heat as though it were harming the skin. The result is a rapid increase in circulation, reduced inflammation, and renewed cell development. IPL also breaks down concentrated pigments, which your body then eliminates through your lymphatic system.
Here are some circumstances that might prompt you to give IPL treatment some serious thought.
We all know that spending time in the sun can damage our skin. But warm days by the pool or ocean, walks in the park, and outdoor gatherings are hard to pass up. If you’re seeing the results of those outdoor hours in your skin, IPL can erase that damage and restore clear skin.
Rosacea is a skin issue that causes areas of abnormally pink or red facial skin. These patches can include visible blood vessels and small, raised bumps. IPL is a wonderful treatment option for rosacea because it targets areas of redness and can also smooth skin texture.
While most of us only experience active acne during our teens and early adult years, the effects can linger for decades. If acne left you with visible scarring, you’ve probably tried many over-the-counter products to minimize the appearance of those scars. IPL offers a different solution and works by triggering new collagen production to smooth acne scarring and help it blend with the surrounding skin.
Spider veins develop when tiny valves in a blood vessel become damaged, allowing blood to pool. They become visible through the skin, appearing as red or purple clusters that resemble a spiderweb. IPL heats the trapped blood, damaging the blood vessel walls and causing them to collapse before the blood is processed and eliminated through your lymphatic system.
If you’ve noticed your skin becoming rougher over time, IPL can help restore a soft, smooth feel. Many textural changes happen when you lose some of the collagen that gives your skin its natural padding. IPL treatments trigger new collagen production, which plumps and tightens the skin from within.
Intense-pulsed light treatments are a great fit for many people, but you have a wide range of options to choose from. If you’re still uncertain whether IPL is the best fit for your needs, the best way to decide is by coming in for a personalized skin assessment and consultation.
At D’Allure Medspa, we never pressure you to choose one treatment over another or to upsell you in any way. Our goal is to listen to your concerns and help you find the best possible treatment approach.
